America is at an important crossroads in deciding what direction to take our national energy policy. Unfortunately, legislation pending in the Senate right now will lead us down the wrong path. The Senate energy bill prolongs our dependence on foreign oil, wastes tax payer money to subsidize big energy companies, and opens the door for drilling in Western Arctic Alaska and other wild lands.

At a time when consumers are paying high prices for oil and natural gas, and our country is increasing its dependence on oil imports from the most unstable regions in the world, the United States needs bold leadership from the Senate by adopting 21st century clean energy policies.
We need a national energy policy that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, increase our use of homegrown clean energy, require reductions in global warming pollution, and improve energy efficiency. The Senate energy bill falls short in every one of these critical areas.

Republicans Push for Energy Bill

(June 14, 2005) — House Speaker Dennis Hastert is urging Senate Democrats to allow a quick vote on an energy bill, which the House already has passed.
The Senate is expected to begin debating its version of the bill on Tuesday, but press reports said Senate Democrats are likely to press for provisions such as greenhouse gas caps that Republicans will oppose.
“The energy bill will help reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil and diversify our energy supply to eventually lower energy prices,” Hastert said in a press release. “Let’s put politics aside and get this through the Senate and to the president’s desk as soon as possible.” The bill passed by the House in April would help reduce US dependence on foreign oil, supporters say.
According to Hastert, it also would streamline the regulatory and approval process for re-starting idle refineries and building new refineries.
“While the Senate Democrats spend their time planning press conferences to talk about what they might do, House Republicans continue to pass legislation that puts the American people first,” said Hastert. “I urge the Senate Democrats to stop their agenda of obstructionism and pass these important bills.”
Hastert noted that the Senate has not yet taken up the following House-passed bills:
— H.R.6, Energy Policy Act of 2005
— H.R. 8, Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act of 2005
— H.R. 27, Job Training Improvement Act of 2005
— H.R. 366, Vocational and Technical Education for the Future Act
— H.R. 748, Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act of 2005
— H.R.1544, Faster and Smarter Funding for First Responders Act of 2005
