Rep. Lauren Boebert Is Trying to
Turn Back the Clock on Killing Wolves

(April 22, 2025) — In 2021, Wisconsin held its first wolf hunt in years. More than 200 wolves were slaughtered in just 60 hours before the state finally put an end to the hunt.

This was the direct result of federal protections being erased for wolves in the Upper Midwest. A court has since intervened to restore those protections for now — but legislation from Rep. Lauren Boebert would erase them again, and block courts from restoring protections in the future.

Rep. Boebert’s bill is already moving through the House of Representatives. It’s up to us to stop it.

Right now, gray wolves in the Lower 48 are protected under the federal Endangered Species Act — except for in the Northern Rockies.

In Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, hundreds of wolves are hunted down every single year. And they’re killed in some of the most horrifying ways imaginable:

Entire packs are run down by snowmobiles. Pups are shot in their dens before they’re even old enough to walk. Other wolves spend their final days frantically trying to gnaw their way out of steel-jawed traps.

It’s bad enough that this is happening anywhere in our country. But if Rep. Boebert succeeds in erasing federal protections, it could soon be the reality for wolves in the entire Lower 48. Wisconsin’s 2021 wolf hunt will become the new normal, undoing decades of hard-won progress toward wolf recovery.

We know that we can win: We’ve stopped this legislation in Congress before. But we can’t take anything for granted, and we can’t do this alone.
