NEW YORK (April 29, 2025) — Yesterday was the opening day of the two-week-long meeting at the United Nations of States Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. UN High Representative for Disarmament Izumi Nakamitsu opened the meeting with a note of alarm:
“We live in a world of heightened nuclear risks.
The past few years have seen the use of nuclear weapons as tools of coercion. We continue to see the upgrading and even expansion of nuclear arsenals. There are whispers of resumption of nuclear testing and a doubling down on nuclear weapons in national security strategies. “

She called for governments to address a number of priorities at the meeting including to:

  • Recommit to Article VI of the NPT, the nuclear disarmament obligation;
  • Enhance implementation of Article VI and reporting on this;
  • Recognize that any use of a nuclear weapon would be a humanitarian catastrophe and take immediate steps to prevent such use;
  • Ensure the enduring viability of the non-proliferation regime through support for the International Atomic Energy Agency;

How are the governments at the NPT responding to these calls? What concrete proposals are being submitted by like-minded governments and civil society to make progress on nuclear risk-reduction, non-proliferation and disarmament?  What traction are these proposals gaining?

Join us live from the NPT tomorrow (Wednesday April 30) at 1:30pm Eastern Time USA for a report from Jackie Cabasso (Abolition 2000) and Alyn Ware (Parliamentarians for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament – PNND). They will be interviewed by Camilla Braito and Ayleen Roy from Youth Fusion.

As this will be on zoom, the audience will be able to ask questions through the question box and chat box.
