A “Call to Humanity” to End the US-Israeli Genocide in Gaza and Attack Against Iran

A Call to Humanity:
Use the UN’s “Uniting for Peace” Mechanism

to Stop Israel’s Genocide and Military Aggression
and End Washington’s Lock on Diplomacy!
An appeal from Just World Educational

(June 14, 2025) — As Israel’s government and military continue their cruel genocide in Gaza, they have now also unleashed a wide-ranging military attack against locations in Iran in flagrant violation of the core war-prevention provisions of the UN Charter. This latest attack raises tensions across the Middle East, and globally.

For many years, our government here in the United States has arrogated to itself the right to dominate international diplomacy on both the Israel-Iran issue and the Israel-Palestine issue. In both cases it has used that dominance to protect and bolster Israel’s position (while successive US governments have also continued to provide high levels of military and intelligence support to Israel’s unlawful military actions and severe abuses of human rights.)

As a citizen organization based in the United States, Just World Educational has long called for both the Palestine Question and the Iran Question to be resolved peacefully and on the basis of UN resolutions and in accord with international law. We have advocated for these goals within the US political system to the best of our ability, but we and our allies have been unable to end, or even diminish, the “ironclad”  support with which successive US governments have reinforced Israel’s militarism, cruelty, and aggression.

This US support is under-girded by Washington’s possession and use of its veto power in the UN Security Council. In recent months we have seen Washington use its veto many times to block the Security Council from taking effective steps to end the genocide in Gaza, and it now seems probable that President Trump will use the US veto to block the Council from taking effective steps to de-escalate and resolve Israel’s (US-backed) conflict with Iran.

Today, we call urgently on peoples and governments around the world to use all the nonviolent means at their disposal to nullify Washington’s veto power at the Security Council regarding these two issues, each of which poses an extremely grave threat to international peace and security and the core values of the United Nations.

We call on leading members of the international community to re-empower the United Nations by invoking the 1950 “Uniting for Peace” mechanism– as it was previously used by US President Dwight Eisenhower back in 1956, when he persuaded the Security Council to invoke it to nullify the vetoes with which Britain and France tried to protect from UN interference the aggressive actions that they and Israel undertook against Egypt that year.

During the 1956 crisis, Eisenhower crucially also used the United States’ power in the international economy to compel the prompt compliance of London, Paris, and Israel with the UN demand that they withdraw their armed forces from Egyptian and Egyptian-administered lands (including Gaza.)

We note that today, China, the European Union, the BRICS nations, ASEAN, and many other nations command considerable power within the global economy. We call on these nations’ leaders to recognize the extreme threat that the illegal and escalatory violence of the Israeli-US axis today poses to the international order and to use all nonviolent means at their disposal– including their economic power– to nullify Washington’s veto on Middle Eastern issues and thereby to regain for the United Nations the degree of diplomatic leadership with respect to war prevention and global security that was promised to the peoples of the world in the UN Charter.

We maintain that only in this way can the integrity of the UN-led system be preserved and revitalized. Washington’s recent actions have accentuated the chaos already afflicting the world’s political and economic systems. The actions taken by the US Government, often in close alliance with Israel, to obliterate the peace and security of the peoples of the Middle East have had long-lasting effects. In both these dangerous arenas, it is time for the responsible governments of the world to unite to compel Washington to comply with the norms and resolutions of the United Nations and affiliated bodies such as the World Trade Organization and the International Criminal Court.
