ACTION ALERT: We Must Reject
Trump’s Illegal War on Iran

(June 23, 2025) — What Peace Action and our colleagues have worked to prevent for over two decades has now unfortunately occurred, with President Donald Trump’s unilateral, illegal, and unconstitutional attack on Iran, joining Israel’s illegal war. So, two nuclear powers are now attacking a country that does not have nuclear weapons. Have we seen this movie before? It’s madness. The attack is an impeachable offense, so Trump is evidently going for a hat trick.
We cannot forget how we got here. It is Trump’s fault. In his first term, he petulantly pulled the US out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 2015 multilateral pact with Iran negotiated by President Obama that had verifiably stopped Iran well short of attaining The Bomb.
Any further deaths on any side in this conflict are Trump’s responsibility. Iran may well accelerate its nuclear program, which was still short of having actual nuclear weapons, withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, kick out the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors, who were still on the ground at Iran’s facilities, and retaliate with attacks in myriad ways, including against 40,000 US troops in the region.
Trump’s attack was also an attempt to pre-empt Congressional action, as Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) had last week introduced the Iran War Powers Resolution, S. J. Res 59, along with the House companion H. Con. Res. 38, introduced by US Rep Thomas Massie (R-KY) and US Rep Ro Khanna (D-CA). These resolutions merely — and correctly — state that it is Congress, and only Congress, that can decide to take the country to war.
We cannot let Trump get away with this. We need to raise our voices now! Please call Congress today, via the Congressional switchboard and demand your US Representative and two US Senators vote in favor of the Iran War Powers Resolutions, S. J. Res. 59 in the Senate, and H. Con. Res. 38 in the House (make three calls, please).

2) Ask to be connected to your senators’ and/or representative’s offices (make three calls, one to each senator and one to your House Rep.).
3) Once connected, give them this message (in as much of your own words as possible):
Hello, my name is ____________ and I’m a voting constituent from (your city). I am calling today to urge the Senator/Representative to vote YES on and support a War Powers Resolution (S.J. Res 59 SENATE or H. Con. Res 38 HOUSE) to use Congress’s constitutional authority to pull us back from Trump’s illegal war with Iran.
According to recent polling from the Economist/YouGov, an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose the conflict between Israel and Iran, and just 16% think the US military should get involved.
But Trump’s warmongering and strikes have pushed us to the brink of an unnecessary war with Iran. I look forward to hearing how my Senator/Representative plans to act on the critical issue.
Condemnation of Trump’s war from many Members of Congress is pouring in, and the public must urge Congress to do its job, to assert its Constitutional authority and vote to reject this war, which it must do as soon as possible.
