Damning New Report in Canada

(August 2, 2025) — This week has been a whirlwind.

On Tuesday we launched a ground breaking new report co-authored with the Palestinian Youth Movement and published by the Arms Embargo Now campaign that laid bare the Canadian government’s systematic deception regarding its ongoing shipments of weapons in support of Israel’s assault on Gaza.

Our Parliamentary Press Conference launching the report was watched hundreds of thousands of times online and kicked off a landslide of media coverage from front page articles on CBC, the Star, and Globe and Mail, to video broadcasts on CBC national news, Democracy Now, radio coverage across hourly news broadcasts cross-country, podcasts, and more.

But exposing the government’s lies and getting the truth out there is not going to be enough to make a real arms embargo happen. For that, we’ve got to come together with allies across the country to create the political crisis that will force this government to act.

On Thursday over 800 people joined an urgent movement briefing to figure out how to do exactly that.

And then on Friday, at the start of an August long weekend, the government finally responded.

As one of the authors of this report, we are deeply disappointed with Minister Anand’s statement today, which continues a pattern of deception. This statement does not deny that Canada continues to ship arms to Israel but instead tries to muddy the waters to mislead the public.

Faced with a comprehensive report that illustrates the nature of Canada’s arms exports to Israel, Minister Anand responded to the data by cherry-picking, inventing false claims we never made, issuing vague denials, and disputing technicalities about arms sales.

If there were no arms sales to Israel, there wouldn’t be anything to dispute.

If Canada truly wants to stop fueling this genocide, the solution is obvious: a full and immediate two-way arms embargo on Israel.

And we’re not going to stop organizing until we get exactly that.
