Senior Justice Department officials have instructed multiple U.S. attorney’s offices to draft plans to investigate the Open Society Foundations – the pro-democracy philanthropy founded by George Soros, according to a new report in The New York Times. This directive even listed possible charges ranging from racketeering to “material support of terrorism.”[1]
Make no mistake: this is the DOJ carrying out Donald Trump’s orders. The Justice Department’s mission is to serve the best interest of the public, not the personal vendetta of a would-be king. That means federal prosecutors must be insulated from political interference.
What we are seeing now is proof that Trump’s threats to weaponize the government against his perceived political enemies are not empty bluster – they are becoming official policy.
The Open Society Foundations fund human rights, democracy, and equity work around the world. Yet Trump and his allies are twisting baseless and dangerous conspiracy theories into excuses for criminal investigations. They are using the machinery of government to punish dissent and intimidate anyone who opposes the MAGA agenda.
And Soros is not the only target. Federal prosecutors are also preparing potential indictments against former FBI Director James Comey – another prominent critic of Trump. Reports say grand juries may soon be asked to vote on proposed charges.[2]

His latest targets are Democratic donor and philanthropist George Soros and his son, who Trump has baselessly accused of criminal activity simply because Soros supports pro-democracy organizations that challenge the MAGA agenda.
This is not an isolated incident. Trump’s DOJ has launched investigations into former President Barack Obama, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and members of Congress like Sen. Adam Schiff – all singled out for the “crime” of holding Trump accountable. Now he’s making reckless claims against philanthropists because he doesn’t like their politics.
Condemn the Weaponization of the DOJ
President Trump is once again weaponizing the Justice Department to attack his political enemies. He has demanded that Democratic donor and philanthropist George Soros – and his son – be charged with crimes, parroting baseless, conspiracy theories, many of which are grounded in vicious antisemitism. His real concern: the Soros philanthropy funds pro-democracy organizations that oppose the MAGA agenda.
Turning federal law enforcement into a tool of personal vengeance is a hallmark of authoritarian rule. These threats are meant to silence dissent and intimidate anyone who dares to stand in Trump’s way. We demand an immediate end to this dangerous abuse of power, and we affirm every American’s right to participate in civic life free from fear and retaliation.
