ACTION: Sign This Petition:
The Pentagon has issued new rules demanding that journalists secure prior approval before reporting—even on unclassified information—and sign a pledge or risk losing credentials. This is an immediate, dangerous escalation of government control over the press, and it cannot stand.
Media outlets across the country have a responsibility to protect independent reporting. We call on editors and executives to publicly refuse these restrictions, decline to sign any pledge that conditions access on prior restraint, and coordinate a unified response to keep journalists on the beat.
This crackdown is part of a broader pattern under President Trump that has weakened press freedom norms in the United States. Leading watchdogs have warned throughout 2025 that press freedom is no longer a given here. The new Pentagon policy takes that erosion to a new level by converting access into a censorship regime, undermining the public’s right to know what our government is doing in our name.
Time is critical. The policy has been distributed and can be enforced immediately, chilling reporting on national security, veterans, spending, and military family issues. If newsrooms fold, the precedent will spread across agencies. If newsrooms resist together, the policy will collapse under public, legal, and congressional pressure.
Add your name to the petition and tell our nation’s leading outlets to stand up for the First Amendment and refuse Pentagon censorship—today.
