Congress is challenging the Bush administration’s dangerous nuclear weapons agenda. The House of Representatives recently cut funds for the most provocative programs to develop new kinds of nuclear weapons. Now the Senate is debating whether to approve funding for these same programs. Please write your senators and tell them to stop the Bush administration’s reckless drive for new nuclear weapons.

The Letter:
Dear Senator,

When you consider the Energy and Water Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2005, I urge you to eliminate funds for the most provocative programs in the president’s proposed nuclear weapons budget: the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator, Advanced Concepts research, the Modern Pit Facility, and enhanced test readiness.

These programs all threaten to undermine the United States’ leadership role in nonproliferation. We cannot credibly ask other countries to restrain their nuclear weapons programs while we aggressively advance work on new weapons.

The House of Representatives has already agreed to eliminate all funds for development of new nuclear weapons. I hope that you will support efforts in the Senate to follow this path and convey a clear message to the president that it is wrong–and counterproductive–to pursue new nuclear weapons while trying to stop others from acquiring them.
Sincerely,

(your name and address will be inserted)
