(June 17, 2005) — We made history yesterday! Thirty-five Congress Members attended a hearing organized by AfterDowningStreet.org and Congressman John Conyers. The hearing examined the question of whether there is good cause to investigate possible impeachable offenses by the President in his justification of the war.

Congressman Charles Rangel said at the hearing, “Quite frankly, evidence that appears to be building up points to whether or not the president has deliberately misled Congress to make the most important decision a president has to make, going to war.”

Seven Congress Members, immediately after the hearing, proceeded to the White House, where Conyers delivered a letter, bearing 122 Congress Members’ signatures and those of 560,000 Americans. The letter demanded answers to the troubling facts presented in the Downing Street Minutes. These seven members then joined the AfterDowningStreet.org coalition and several hundred supporters at a rally in Lafayette Square Park.

And we awoke the mainstream media! They are now asking questions at White House press brifings, writing articles, and chattering away on the broadcast media.

We did all of this in exactly three weeks, and we’re exhausted but exhilerated. However, this is the beginning, not the end, and if we are going to be able to continue, we will need funding.

This is a turning point.

Impeachment at White House Doorstep
VoteToImpeach / ImpeachBush.org

Join the tens of thousands who will call for impeachment at the White House at 12 noon on September 24

We’re doing it! The banners and signs of ImpeachBush.org were on prominent display yesterday on the doorstep of the White House as Congressman Conyers and hundreds of others rallied outside of the White House to denounce Bush’s pattern of lies and deceit. Photos of ImpeachBush.org banners were picked up all over the mass media last night. The tide is turning. Bush is scrambling to “explain” Iraq to a population that is turning against the administration and its lies and criminal conduct. We are going to turn up the heat in the months ahead.

Help us take the next steps by making the most generous contribution you can today.

The grassroots movement for impeachment has made itself into a force too powerful to ignore. Yesterday (June 16) Congressman John Conyers held a hearing at the Capitol followed by a rally at the White House demanding the Bush Administration answer the questions raised by the Downing Street Memorandum.

It is hardly news to those who have been working to demand impeachment of Bush and other officials of the administration for High Crimes and Misdemeanors that the administration lied to the people of the United States in their pre-planned and duplicitous rush to war.

But for the politicians and media who have tried to ignore the plain reality of this criminal conduct, the truth is becoming unavoidable. The hearing was broadcast coast to coast by Pacifica radio, which also invited a representative from ImpeachBush.org to provide commentary on the impact of the Downing Street Memo as evidence of impeachable offenses.

The response to the September 24 mobilization in the last few days has been incredible. People in big cities, small towns and every place in between are telling us that they want to be part of and help support this massive demonstration in Washington DC.

It will be the action of the people at the grassroots that will make everything else move forward. This is what led to the eventual expose and resignation of Nixon three decades ago. The people move first, then the elected officials and the media can’t help but take notice.

Everyone should wear an ImpeachBush.org t-shirt in the next weeks of warm weather, put up a lawn sign or give one to a friend or neighbor. This is the time to get the message out there! You can pick up shirts, signs, great baseball caps – all at the ImpeachBush Resource Center today.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, we are able to offer a “pay what you can” price for the lawn signs for a limited time as part of the new Neighborhood Visibility Campaign.
