BAGHDAD (August 7, 2007) — As if any more evidence were required, a spurt of attacks on Iraq’s Mosques by US forces, their Iraqi collaborators and even their newly bought and paid for Sunni militias is a clear sign that these so-called Sunnis are nothing more than thugs and thieves that have no respect for places of worship.

In a dispatch posted at 11:05am Baghdad time Monday morning, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that a joint force of US troops accompanied by puppet Iraqi troops raided the ‘Anbar Mosque located between ‘Umar ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Street and 20 Street in al-A‘zamiyah on Sunday evening.

The AMSI reported that the raid was a part of a wave of American attacks on mosques and places of worship known for their opposition to the US occupation and its plans to partition Iraq. Earlier on Sunday, US forces raided the Abu Hanifah Mosque in al-A‘zamiyah (see story below).

The AMSI reported a source in the puppet police as saying that the armed men attacked Shaykh Abu Maysarah, the Imam of the al-Jabbar Mosque in the al-Khadra’ neighborhood of western Baghdad, opening fire on the Shaykh as he walked with his son and daughter near his home after noon on Sunday. The Shaykh and his son were killed instantly and his daughter suffered severe wounds, for which she has been hospitalized.

US, Puppet Forces Raid Abu Hanifah Mosque, Lock Down Al-A‘Zamiyah District

In a dispatch posted at 10:59am Baghdad time Monday morning, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that a joint force of US and puppet regime troops raided the historic Mosque of Abu Hanifah an-Nu‘man and the College of al-Imam al-A‘zam in Baghdad’s al-A‘zamiyah district on Sunday. Witnesses said that the forces ransacked the mosque and shouted obscenities at the guards, whom they rounded up and arrested.

The AMSI reported witnesses as saying that the joint US-puppet force arrested all the guards in the mosque and college and then sealed off the entire district of al-A‘zamiyah until further notice.

US-Backed Sunni Sectarian Gunmen Storm Historic Mosque In Baghdad Sunday

In a dispatch posted on its website Sunday, Quds Press reported that members of an armed militia backed by the US occupation and Iraqi puppet regime took over the historic Abu Hanifah an-Nu‘man Mosque in Baghdad northern al-A‘zamiyah district on Sunday.

A large force of gunmen of the so-called “Army of the Awakening” (Jaysh as-Sahwah) under the leadership of an individual named Wathiq al-‘Ubaydi drove up to the mosque in pickups on Sunday, beat up the guards at the mosque and then stormed inside. The pro-American Sunni fundamentalist gunmen were equipped with light and medium weapons and arrived under the protection of US troops who remained encircling yet outside the mosque area during the attack.

Wathiq al-‘Ubaydi used a loudspeaker to address the neighborhood, saying, “I will not withdraw until I have crushed all the gunmen in the area – by which he meant the fighters of the Iraqi Resistance.

The so-called “Army of the Awakening” has been heard more frequently around al-A‘zamiyah. “As-Sahwah” (“the Awakening”) is a term frequently used by Islamic fundamentalists to denote the rise of Islamic politics in recent years. But the members of the force known as the “Army of the Awakening” were recruited by the Americans and the Iraqi puppet regime in the same way that the members of the kindred organization the “Council of the al-Anbar Awakening” were recruited as a sort of Sunni sectarian militia serving the American occupation in al-Anbar Province.

Local residents report that the “Army of the Awakening” includes a number of residents of al-A‘zamiyah known for their ties with the American occupation – people who are locally called “stooges.”

Wathiq al-‘Ubaydi is known in al-A ‘zamiyah as a former bodyguard of ‘Abd al-Hammud, the Secretary of Iraqi President Saddam Husayn. Quds Press reported that al-‘Ubaydi was suddenly made the Imam of a mosque at one point prior to the American occupation, even though he had previously been a military man and was not associated with any religious movement.
