(March 11, 2011) — Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi today called for a formal inquiry by the Security and Defense Committee to investigate several recent attacks by US “non-combat” troops in northern Iraq. The attacks, according to Nujaifi, violate the Status of Forces Agreement prohibition against such operations going on without coordination by both provincial and national officials.

One attack earlier in this week came in the Salah al-Din Province, when an “air drop” operation led to an attack on a doctor in a small village and later to the arrest of his brother as a “suspect.” The incident was largely shrugged off by the US but caused quite a stir in Iraq’s parliament.

Parliament’s Health Committee already condemned the killing, and had likewise urged an investigation into the attack. The Security and Defense Committee, however, would be in a much better position to probe it.

(March 10, 2011) — Iraq’s Parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi has called for an inquiry into the United States military’s attacks on Iraqi civilians. Nujaifi called on the parliament’s Security and Defense Committee to investigate the recent US attacks in Kirkuk and al-Amarah. He further pointed out that the raids are in violation of Washington’s security agreement with Baghdad.

According to Iraqi lawmaker Amr Al-Juburi, the US forces, in collaboration with a local emergency regiment, were deployed in a village in the northern governorate of Salah ad Din. The forces killed a youth and arrested his brother, he went on to say.

Since the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003, more than 1,300,000 people have been killed in Iraq, 4.7 million displaced, 5 million children orphaned — nearly half of the country’s children — and the health status has deteriorated to a level not seen since the 1950s. A security accord between Baghdad and Washington requires that all American troops leave Iraq by 2012.

BAGHDAD (March 8, 2011) — A US force conducted an air drop operation on a village in al-Huweija district and raided some houses, killed a physician and arrested his brother, according to an Iraqi legislator on Tuesday.

“US special forces, in association with forces from Salah al-Din province, conducted an air drop operation on a village in Huweija, where they killed a physician and detained his brother on Sunday (March 6) night,” Omar al-Juburi, a member of parliament from al-Wasat (Centrist) Coalition, said during a parliamentary session Tuesday.

Juburi urged the parliament to “condemn this sinful incident and form a committee to investigate it.” He also called for releasing the killed physician’s brother and that the US
forces pay compensations to his family.

Osama al-Nujeifi, the parliament speaker, asked the security & defense committee to investigate this incident, adding it represented a “clear violation of the status of forces agreement signed between Iraq and the United States.”
