ACTION ALERT on Global Nuke Weapons
No Nukes, Netherlands

Get Involved: Sign the petition to start a ban on nuclear weapons now!

(June 21, 2013) — There are 17,000* nuclear weapons around the world. It only takes one to cause a humanitarian catastrophe on a horrific scale. Yet we’ve talked ourselves into having 2,000 of them on hair-trigger alert, ready to be launched within minutes.

We are potentially only minutes away from the horror of seeing an entire city flattened in an instant, killing hundreds of thousands of people with no adequate humanitarian relief possible. Its effects will spread across borders and generations. This is madness, not a security strategy.

There is only one cure for this threat. We have to ban nuclear weapons.
If you believe that the time for waiting and hoping is over and that we have to act now, sign the petition and send a message to your government that you don’t accept the status quo. You want your government to start negotiating a ban on nuclear weapons now.

• Approximately 17,265 according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) (June 3, 2013) and the Federation of American Scientists.

THE PETITION
I call on my government to initiate and support negotiations for a treaty to ban nuclear weapons at the earliest possible date.

Get creative and take action!
There are lots of actions for a nuclear weapons free future. Do you want to get involved? Maybe the new No Nukes campaign movie will inspire you to take action: be creative, have fun and stay safe by saying: No Nukes!

Do you need more inspiration? Here are some more specific action ideas:
• Write to your politicians to ask what they are doing for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

• Sign petitions against nuclear weapons. There is power in numbers. Together our voices speak louder.

• Start a local Gang of Four with your friends. Throughout the years, groups of politicians and policy makers have spoken out against nuclear weapons, usually in groups of 3 or 4. Start a local group with your friends, family or others and spread the message: No Nukes!

• Ask a member of the NoNukes team to speak at your local event

• Draw attention to the issue by organizing a campaign in your community. A good example is the campaign of a group in Heerlen (the Netherlands) which showed how much explosive nuclear power there is in the world today. They did so by filling two transparent cones with matches, each representing the nuclear striking power of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Passers-by were asked to guess how
many matches there were in the cones. (The correct answer: 58,935).

Talk about Nukes

Why do we need a treaty to abolish nuclear weapons? from ICAN on Vimeo.

Knowledge is power, and we can only do something about the problem of nuclear weapons if people know about it. You don’t have to be a recognized expert to talk to people about nukes, so tell your friends, tell your family. You’ll sound like an expert when you stay up to date.

We can help — visit this site for the latest news, facts and ideas.

Many organisations are involved with campaigning against nuclear weapons, including one near you. Get involved and take action together with others
in your community.
