(August 8, 2014) — Latest figures show Israeli forces have arrested more than a thousand Palestinians protesting against Tel Aviv’s aerial and ground attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip. Sources said the activists were detained during the crackdown on towns of Palestinian Arab population across Israel.

Israeli media outlets have cited a lawyer representing some of the arrested people as saying that dozens of them are being held without charge. Maisa Arshid said the crackdown on activists is only getting worse, with dozens of people getting picked up every week in the northern Israeli town of Nazareth alone.

Nazareth’s population is made up predominantly of Arab citizens of Israel, almost all of whom are either Muslim or Christian. The lawyer also said the arrests came despite Israeli officials had authorized some demonstrations.

The Israeli forces have also arrested a large number of demonstrators across the occupied West Bank in recent days. Palestinians in the West Bank said they were out in the streets to show solidarity with their brothers and sisters killed in Gaza.

Thousands of Palestinians are reportedly being held in Israeli prisons under administrative detention orders. Administrative detention is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charge that allows Israel to incarcerate Palestinians for up to six months. The detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.

The latest developments come as a three-day ceasefire, which came into effect on Tuesday, is set to expire in the blockaded Palestinian coastal enclave on Friday.

On July 8, Israeli warplanes began pounding numerous sites in the Gaza Strip, demolishing houses and burying families under the rubble. Israeli troops also launched a ground invasion into the impoverished Palestinian territory on July 17.

The Israeli regime’s relentless attacks against the Gaza Strip left nearly 1,900 Palestinians dead, more than 430 of them children, and injured over 9,500 others.

Netanyahu Asks for US Help over ICC Charges

(August 7, 2014) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked visiting US lawmakers to help his regime dodge war crime charges related to Tel Aviv’s current aggression on the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu reportedly met with US officials on Wednesday, asking them to ensure that Palestinians’ strategy of going to the International Criminal Court (ICC) does not succeed.

The development came as Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki met with ICC officials in The Hague earlier this week to file a complaint detailing war crimes committed by the Israeli army over the past few weeks in Palestine. Palestinian officials are also preparing to make a formal application to join the international tribunal.

Netanyahu asked the US delegation of politicians to help his regime stay out of the ICC prosecution.

Some 1,900 Palestinians, including more than 400 children, have been killed and over 9,500 others wounded since the beginning of Israel’s military attacks against the Gaza Strip on July 8. A 72-hour humanitarian truce between the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and Israel took effect at 8 a.m. (0500 GMT) on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Netanyahu once again defended Israel’s aggression in Gaza, saying Tel Aviv’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza was necessary. He also said that the Israeli military is “prepared for anything.”
