Ask Your Planet Before taking Petrolify(R)
The Post-Petroleum Institute
(September 2014) — Petroleum is a miracle substance. With millions of years of solar energy stored in every drop, it enables much of what we most enjoy in life; from plastic toys and mobile phones to the highly complex global systems that feed, shelter, and govern billions of people.
Unfortunately, our unparalleled levels of abundance come with significant side effects, which include awfully scary things like environmental collapse, species extinction and resource wars.

We don’t have to continue down this highway to hell on earth. Our way of life can be more beautiful and fulfilling than ever, and, importantly, for more of us. But it requires us being much more thoughtful about how and how much we use energy. USE LESS, LIVE MORE.
Side Effects May Vary
Our addiction to oil (and coal and natural gas) comes
with some surprising, and potentially fatal, costs.
Break the Addiction
Here are some ways you can get started.
The first step to breaking our fossil fuel addiction is understanding it.
Take the Pledge
Only four bullet points, but taking the pledge means you’re ready for an entirely different energy reality.
Take the Pledge
Energy is at the heart of the human predicament in the 21st century. The ecological and economic costs of non-renewable (and disappearing) fossil fuels are rising rapidly, and dragging down our economy. In every sense of the word, this is unsustainable. It’s time to remake our energy economy under different terms. Join the rest of us who are ready to create our own energy future that doesn’t destroy the planet . . . just to keep the lights on.
THE ENERGY REALITY PLEDGE:
I’m ready for an energy reality that:
* Prioritizes reducing overall demand for energy through curtailment and efficiency.
* Treats fossil fuels like the valuable, limited resources they are.
* Shifts from centralized non-renewable energy supplied by unaccountable multinationals to decentralized renewable energy produced by communities.
* Minimizes the environmental and social impacts of this transition.
Spread the Word
Ask your friends and loved ones if Petrolify (R) is right for them.
Petrolify is an initiative of Post Carbon Institute, which aims to bring energy realism to the public conversation.
Profound essays coupled with powerful images & art to change our understanding of our energy reality.
Data, analysis, and other resources that tell the true story of the so-called “shale revolution.”
Information, inspiration, and resources to respond to the sustainability crises of the 21st Century.
