US Strategic Command Chief: Iran Fully Adhering to Nuclear Deal

US Strategic Command Chief:
Iran Fully Adhering to Nuclear Deal

Says Concerns Are Purely on Iran’s Conventional Missiles

Jason Ditz / AntiWar.com

(September 20, 2017) – Amid expectations that President Trump is going to decertify the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran, refusing to the admit to Congress that Iran is complying, US Strategic Command chief Gen. John Hyten has affirmed that Iran is fully complyingwith the terms of the deal.

Gen. Hyten was speaking about the deal at an event for the Hudson Institute, saying Iran’s compliance was not a questionable fact, and insisting that US “concerns” regarding Iran are separate from the nuclear deal.

Hyten said the US and its allies had concerns about Iran developing and testing conventional ballistic missiles. Admitting that this is not a violation of the nuclear deal is significant, as Trump Administration officials have often linked the two issues.

The one thing that does link the two issues is that US hawks have often sought to reimpose sanctions they were obliged to lift from Iran under the nuclear deal, with the missile tests serving as a pretext. Such sanctions are seen as violating the nuclear deal, though the administration is likely planning to do that anyhow at this point.

ACTION ALERT:
Trump’s Giant Step Towards War with Iran

Win Without War

(September 20, 2017) — On Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly, Donald Trump put our country on a path to war with Iran. Previewing his intent to tear up the Iran deal, Trump called his predecessor’s historic diplomatic accomplishment an “embarrassment.” But what’s really embarrassing is Trump’s lies about the nuclear deal — said in front of an institution that the United States helped build in the name of diplomacy and peace.

In his first ever speech to the United Nations today, Trump set the stage to withdraw the US from the Iran deal, one of the most historic diplomatic agreements in years. He will claim that Iran isn’t complying with the deal or that the agreement harms US national security.

But the truth is that the deal makes us safer and it makes the world safer. Period. It takes one of America’s biggest national security concerns — a nuclear-armed Iran — off the table, and it does it without dropping a single bomb or risking a single soldier’s life.

So why does Trump want to tear it up? The only logical conclusion is that he’s itching for war.

The truth is that Trump’s own intelligence, defense, and diplomatic officials, as well as our allies and the United Nations nuclear watchdog have stated that Iran is upholding the agreement.

Trump himself has twice certified Iranian compliance. So withholding certification in October isn’t about the deal not working. And if Trump breaks the deal and once again destroys our nation’s credibility on the global stage, no one will trust us to honor our word in future diplomatic agreements — which means that you can kiss diplomacy with North Korea goodbye.

Take a look at North Korea. Its nuclear program has expanded and improved ever since President George W. Bush ended US engagement, believing, like Trump, that threats and name-calling would get us more than diplomacy. Now look where we are!

Without diplomacy, we will find ourselves right back on a collision course for war with Iran, a war that no one would win but could kill hundreds of thousands. That’s where we come in. It’s up to us to demand a different path. It’s up to us to make clear that the American public supports diplomacy. And it’s up to us to help prevent a war with Iran.

We can’t let Trump’s lies go unanswered. Thankfully, there are hundreds of thousands of us and only one of him. Let’s use our voices to set the record straight in every newspaper across the country.

ACTION: Get the word out that Americans support staying in the Iran deal, not needlessly turning back towards a deadly and massive war with Iran. Write an LTE today! Donald Trump had his turn at the podium. Now it’s our turn to make our voices heard.

Trump Claims to Have Decided
On Iran Deal, Offers No Details

Senators Ask for Written Report on
Basis for Trump’s Decision

Jason Ditz / AntiWar.com

(September 20, 2017) – A mid-October deadline to decide whether or not to certify that Iran is complying with the P5+1 nuclear deal is fast approaching. President Trump says that he’s already decided what he’s going to say, though what that is remains a secret.

Trump has been overtly hostile to the P5+1 deal, and wanted to declare Iran in violation last time, even though the rest of the cabinet noted there were no actual violations. Trump at the time was very public about being unhappy with being forced to admit Iran was complying, and has suggested that would be the “last time.”

The assumption then is that Trump is either going to withdraw from the deal by falsely accusing Iran of a violation, or simply pick a fight with the other P5+1 members by demanding changes to the deal.

Senators are already anticipating the problems related to either move, and are demanding a written report from the administration on what Trump is basing his decision upon.

It’s unlikely the administration is going to comply with requests by Congress for information, as Trump has been keen to keep his intentions secret on myriad issues. This is also likely to continue to prevent world leaders from contradicting any false claims that the White House is basing its decision upon.
