ACTION ALERT: No First Use of Nuclear Weapons
Win Without War
(November 17, 2017) — Finally. No beating around the bush. Congressman Adam Smith (WA-09) just introduced a one-sentence bill that gets right to the point:
“It is the policy of the United States to not use nuclear weapons first.”
Preventing the United States from triggering a nuclear apocalypse isn’t just general common sense. It’s also urgently-needed protection from a president with an itchy Twitter finger and the sole authority to launch nuclear war.
Trump is playing an international game of chicken with the most deadly weapons humanity has ever dreamed up. It’s time to cut him off.
We both know that common sense legislation doesn’t mean widespread support in Congress. This bill threatens the war lobby in Washington and their profit-driven agenda — so they’re eager to stifle the bill at the bottom of Congress’ to-do list.
H.R. 441. A BILL
To establish the policy of the United States regarding the no-first-use of nuclear weapons.
Be it enacted by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. Policy on No-First-Use of Nuclear Weapons.
It is the policy of the United States to not use nuclear weapons first.
ACTION ALERT: Trump Is Dangerous
Win Without War
(November 20, 2017) — We keep saying it: Trump is dangerous. 21,000 of us just spoke up again as citizen co-sponsors of a new bill to to keep Trump’s finger off the big red button. And it looks like the media is saying it too:
Donald Trump poses an unacceptable threat — not just to our nation, but to the world.
Don’t take it from me — take it from the Chicago Tribune‘s headline earlier this week:
“Could anyone stop Trump from launching nukes?
The answer: No.”
Our grassroots pressure is finally getting Congress and the mainstream media to wake up to the existential threat of Trump’s nuclear launch authority.
Read the recent headlines below:
* Fearing Trump, Congress Holds First Hearing in Decades on President’s Nuclear Authority.
* Senator Chris Murphy: We Are Concerned Trump ‘Is So Unstable, Is So Volatile” He Might Order Nuclear Strike.
* The Caveman and The Bomb: Does Trump Grasp the Horror of His Threat to “Totally Destroy” North Korea?
* Nobody Can Stop Trump from Launching Nukes — and It’s Freaking Senators Out
* There’s No Real Check on Trump’s Power to End the World
* Shaken By Trump, Senators Ask: What Stops Him From Launching Nukes?
These headlines are absolutely right. Donald Trump is too “unstable and volatile” to be trusted with nukes, just as Senator Chris Murphy said. And we can’t rest until he can no longer unilaterally hit the big red button and start a nuclear catastrophe.
Every dollar you contribute means another ounce of pressure — from partnering with champions in the House and Senate, to driving massive people power alongside our allies nationwide, to making sure the media keeps ringing those alarm bells loud and clear. Because of our nonstop agitation, our country is starting to realize that we must pass laws that strip Trump of his unchecked authority to launch a nuclear strike.
Together, we can keep the pressure on Congress in headlines, on phone lines, and on Capitol Hill until we can stop Trump’s unprecedented apocalypse-starting power.
The suitcase that follows each president everywhere, containing the codes and the button that permit that one individual to launch World War III
ACTION ALERT: Stop Donald Trump from Sending Us into Nuclear War!
Hon. Jim McGovern / US House of Representatives
WASHINGTON, DC (October 12, 2017) — As President, Donald Trump has absolute authority to initiate nuclear war, with no check on his power. No individual should ever possess such destructive power, let alone one with such an impulsive and bombastic temperament. The Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act would require the President to obtain a formal declaration of war from Congress before ordering a nuclear first strike.
Let me be perfectly clear: when it comes to nuclear war, there is no room for error; the push of a button can end millions of lives and render the planet nearly unlivable for a generation. The stakes could not be higher.
And yet, in the United States, the decision to push that red button rests with a single person: the president. And right now, the president is Donald Trump.
Trump has shown himself unfit to make the best choice for our country, even when millions of lives hang in the balance.
That’s why I’m cosponsoring the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017 to make sure that Donald Trump can’t unilaterally send us into World War III. The bill prevents the president from using nuclear weapons without a formal declaration of war from Congress.
Trump has gleefully taunted other world leaders with threats of nuclear annihilation. And he’s repeatedly shown that he views presidential powers as tools to fight his personal battles, no matter how wasteful, absurd, or dangerous.
It is critical that we pass this law. In fact, we should have passed it decades ago; no one person — no matter which party they are from — can be trusted with that kind of power. This president, though, has neither the temperament nor the moral grounding to handle the responsibility of nuclear weapons.
As President, Donald Trump has absolute authority to initiate nuclear war, with no check on his power. No individual should ever possess such destructive power, let alone one with such an impulsive and bombastic temperament.
In Congress, I’m cosponsoring the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act, which would require the President to obtain a formal declaration of war from Congress before ordering a nuclear first strike. Doing so would lessen the danger of a nuclear war, and set us on the path to further reduce and eliminate international nuclear arsenals.
ACTION: Please sign the petition to tell Congress: Pass the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017.

Preventing Nuclear War:
Congress Must Play a Role
Union of Concerned Scientists
The North Korea crisis is just one aspect of an even bigger problem: the Trump administration and nuclear hawks inside and outside of Congress are reportedly pulling together plans to build more “usable” nuclear weapons and spend more than $1 trillion to re-build the entire nuclear arsenal.
Meanwhile, the administration is threatening to walk away from critical US-Russian nuclear arms control agreements that make the world a safer place.
No Unconstitutional Strike against North Korea
Nuclear Age Peace Foundation
WASHINGTON (November 20, 2017) — Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), a veteran of the Korean War that took place in the 1950s, has introduced a bill in the House of Representatives to stop an unconstitutional attack against North Korea.
The bill, H.R. 4140, would prohibit the president from launching a first strike against North Korea without congressional approval.
The bill also calls on the president to “initiate negotiations designed to achieve a diplomatic agreement to halt and eventually reverse North Korea’s nuclear and missile pursuits.”
The bill currently has 61 co-sponsors, and more are urgently needed. Please take a moment to write your representative about H.R. 4140.
If your representative is already a co-sponsor, your message template will be thanking them for having taken action. If your representative is not yet a co-sponsor, your message template will ask them to co-sponsor this important legislation.
