Australians for War Powers Reform

(January 11, 2023) — The next two or three months will be crucial in the campaign for war powers reform. The current parliamentary inquiry is considering more than 100 submissions and is due to report its findings in March.

Will the Labor dominated committee have the courage to end the antiquated ‘captain’s call’ system which allows the Prime Minister alone to take us to war overseas?

Will the committee instead decide to make democracy, transparency and accountability the guiding principles when it comes to deciding on overseas wars.

In this video journalist Michael West clearly and concisely lays out what’s at stake.

Please take a few minutes to watch this video and please forward this email to friends and colleagues so we can get the reform message heard by more Australians.

War Powers Reform
A call for war powers reform in Australia. ‘Be Sure on War: No War Without Parliament’ is a campaign established by Australians for War Powers Reform (AWPR). The organisation that is now called Australians for War Powers Reform was formed in 2012 in response to the apparent ease with which Australian troops are sent to war and the serious problems this leads to – for us as a nation, for our troops and for the civilians where we fight our wars.

Should the Prime Minister have the sole call to take Australians to war? 83% of Australians want Parliament to vote before we do. But what does our elected representatives think? We asked them.
