Over Nord Stream Report

(February 15, 2023) — Russia has requested a UN Security Council meeting to be held following the report from investigative journalist Seymour Hersh that alleged the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines were bombed at the order of President Biden.

“In light of new information regarding the bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, we have requested a UN Security Council meeting be held on February 22, at 3:00 pm New York time,” Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s first deputy representative to the UN, wrote on Telegram on Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that foreign media outlets should look into the details of Hersh’s report. “I urge you perhaps to carry out such probes because no one is banning you from conducting a journalistic investigation,” Lavrov said, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Hersh’s report said that US Navy divers planted explosives on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines during NATO drills in the Baltic Sea in June 2022. Hersh said Norway cooperated with the US on the operation and that a Norwegian spy plane detonated the explosives months after they were planted on September 26, 2022.

One of the most explosive allegations in the report is the fact that the Biden administration began planning how to destroy the pipeline before Russia invaded Ukraine.

For years, the US tried to stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline with sanctions as it would have doubled the amount of gas flowing from Russia to Germany. The report said Washington was worried that Germany’s reliance on Russian gas could have made Berlin reluctant to supply Ukraine with money and weapons.

On Wednesday, Hersh published a short article on Substack about the response to his report and hinted more could be coming.

“There may be more to learn about Joe Biden’s decision to prevent the German government from having second thoughts about the lack of cheap gas this winter,” Hersh said. “Stay tuned. We are only on first base.”

Hersh, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist best known for exposing tÅhe My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War, criticized US media outlets for ignoring his bombshell report. He said neither The New York Times nor The Washington Post has “run a word at this point about the pipeline story, not even to quote the White House’s denial of my reporting.”
