Global Day of Action
Against Nuclear Weapons

GENEVA, NEW YORK, SALT LAKE CITY (November 22, 2023) — As governments, experts and campaigners get ready for a week of building on the treaty banning nuclear weapons, join the international day of action on Sunday 26 November to call for an end to nuclear weapons and bring attention to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)!

All around the world, people will be taking action to show the delegations in New York that we expect them to be bold, courageous and use the TPNW to dismantle nuclear deterrence, and make sure the rest of the world is paying attention to this crucial opportunity.

What Does This Action Look Like?
Whatever shape you can pull off! Big demonstrations bringing together thousands of people are and look amazing, but you don’t always have to have the numbers to make an impact. A strong sign, a good backdrop can be enough to get the message across, but if you have the resources and energy to go big, then this is the right time to hit the streets! With the right action and a good image, you can make media in your country pay attention. With enough actions around the world, we can make the pressure feel global.

Wherever you are, make sure to be loud and proud that the TPNW is here and is the way to end the threat of nuclear weapons. And if you need some ideas to get started, check out our gallery of actions below for inspiration.

List Your Event
To make this global day of action big and bold, we need to amplify each other’s actions – ahead of time and on the 26th itself. So if you’re planning an action, please add it to the 2MSP calendar allowing participants from around the world to find and engage with what you’re doing. We want to show that these events are taking place around the world, so please take a quick moment to post your event details.

  • Templates

While this is not a one size fits all action, we have some useful social media templates including images and text for you to adapt and use to promote your own event:

As the global day of action approaches, we will be adding more resources, like banner templates and a media pitching kit, so watch this space.

And if you are looking for a creative yet low-cost action, check out the Artists Against the Bomb! This incredible exhibit allows you to use some incredible artworks wherever you are in the world, just by printing posters at 60*90cm in black and white. Where you show the posters is up to your creativity: from a gallery exhibit or a festival stand, an outdoor exhibit on a shopping street or a floating exhibition, to a photoshoot in the park!

Global Day of Action: Sunday, November 26

NEW YORK (November 24, 2023) — We’re in the final countdown to Nuclear Ban Week! As many of us are already making our way to New York, we hope you are also feeling the same excitement, whether you are coming in person or not. To kick things off in true ICAN style, we’re holding the Global Day of Action against nuclear weapons and for the TPNW this Sunday (more info and resources here).

We’ve already heard exciting things from campaigners in Italy, Denmark, the UK and across the US about a variety of different actions, and expect there will be more we haven’t heard from yet. Those of us in New York will also get a chance to show our support on Sunday during the campaigners’ meeting.

While we don’t have lots of time in the breaks, we will be bringing some of our protest materials during the campaigners’ meeting and have a photographer there to help us get some really good looking photos in Central Park (only a few blocks away) during the lunch break. So dress warmly and if you have any TPNW related poster / banners at home, feel free to bring them.

ACTION: Of course, if you can’t make it to New York, and you cannot do an in person event in your hometown, you can also join the Global Day of Action online! You know the drill already, because we’ve done this for Treaty & Nobel anniversaries, days of action on things like BNP Paribas divesting, the G7 to name a few, and you make it look so powerful every time! So on Sunday, just take to your favorite social media (or all of them) and share your messages of support with the hashtags #nuclearban or #TPNW2MSP. You can keep it super simple and positive, like:

  • Nuclear weapons are banned, now it’s time to end them. This global day of action, I’m standing with all the people around the world who support the UN Treaty that bans these weapons of mass destruction.
  • Nuclear weapons endanger everything we love. But there’s a #nuclearban treaty for that! Good luck to everyone meeting in New York for #TPNW2MSP next week to check on progress & agree on next steps.
  • You can, of course, tailor the message to your national context, or the angle about nuclear weapons that gets you most fired up. We’ll be sharing extra graphics and ‘one click’ social media posts on this page before Sunday: https://www.icanw.org/2msp_global_day_of_action

And just a quick reminder that if you are planning an action but need a little extra support to elevate the materials you’re using or the photos / videos coming out of your action, the rapid action fund is still available (but please bear with us if we’re a bit slow to reply because there’s a lot of NBW coordination going on right now).

Finally, a quick request from Venessa: If you are on your way to New York and sharing on social media, please don’t forget to tag us @nuclearban or use #nuclearban so we can help build the hype around this.

Really excited to see what we all pull off together on Sunday — and next week!
