In Honor of Earth Day, April 22

(April 21, 2026) — The first Earth Day more than five decades ago sparked the first flowering of environmental protection in America. On this 57th Earth Day, the system of laws, regulations and procedures that has come to protect our health and well-being is being dismantled; and the diligent, irreplaceable work of scientists, experts and public servants across government is being terminated.

It’s become the difficult job of our newsroom to bear witness and document this unprecedented unraveling, executed with a vengeance, and to hold leaders accountable for the costs and consequences of their decisions. Watchdogs of environmental law and science, our reporters every day are also wrestling with hard questions now confronting our democracy in order to help the public distinguish between reform and recklessness, the rule of law and executive conceit.

How vital a free press is proving itself to be, protecting the environment as well as government by the people. If our reporters didn’t get up every morning to do this important work, how would we know what our government is overturning at breakneck speed?

So much is coming at our newsroom right now that we are having to make tough calls every day – prioritizing this important story but not that one.

Will you help us do more? Hold more government officials and industry leaders accountable? Call more attention to injustice in our communities? To report even more – with accuracy, persistence, and integrity?

In honor of this Earth Day and the first, all gifts to Inside Climate News will be doubled.

Will you give now to invest in our work?
