War Abroad, Rising Costs at Home:
Demand a Ceasefire
Robert Reich / Inequality Media Civic Action
(May 1, 2026) — House Speaker Mike Johnson claimed today that “we are not at war” with Iran.
Hello?
It’s been over two months since Donald Trump began bombing Iran. Over those weeks, the U.S. reportedly killed 120 children by bombing a school; Trump made a genocidal threat to “wipe out” an “entire civilization”; and reports allege that Trump is so impulsive and erratic that aides left him out of minute-by-minute briefings.
No matter what Mike Johnson says, this is an unjust, illegal war — and it needs to end.
The damage doesn’t stop at the border of the targeted country. Military families bear the human burden, while taxpayers pay billions for bombs and war infrastructure, and consumers pay inflated prices at the gas pump, grocery store, and for home electricity and gas. At the same time, the impact on global markets is far-reaching and unpredictable.
Public opinion reflects this strain. Most Americans oppose escalation, recognizing that the costs — human, economic, and moral — are too high. Working Americans should not be asked to pay, either in lives or in livelihoods, for a war defined by such extreme and unlawful rhetoric.
To end this war, we must apply sustained pressure. When a broad, bipartisan majority demands de-escalation and adherence to Constitutional and international law, democratically elected leaders must pay attention. Urging Congress to support a permanent ceasefire is a direct way to reduce harm abroad and at home.
We must call for a permanent ceasefire, to affirm the principle that no leader has the authority to threaten the destruction of an entire people.
ACTION ALERT: Dear Members of Congress
Base Building for Power / Action Network
(May 1, 2026) — I’m writing to urge Congress to step up and check President Trump’s illegal actions by demanding a permanent ceasefire in his war with Iran.
Trump said “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” This is a war crime.
As your constituent, I’m concerned that working people are suffering from a conflict that wealthy elites and politicians are benefiting from. Our sons and daughters are being sent to fight and die. Working taxpayers are paying for the bombs. And we are also paying for rising gas and food prices as a result of this war.
As many as 60% of the American people oppose Trump’s war in Iran. We need Congress to represent our voices, not acquiesce to a wannabe dictator who has his finger on the button.
We’re paying attention, and when election time rolls around, we’ll remember which of our representatives supported Trump’s dangerous actions and which supported a permanent ceasefire.
I urge you to publicly call for a permanent ceasefire in the war with Iran, and take steps to place a check on his abuse of war powers.
