ACTION ALERT:
Don’t Let Them Bankrupt the Post Office
Annie Norman / Americans for Financial Reform

(March 28, 2026) — Trump’s Postmaster General is warning that USPS could run out of money as soon as October and may be unable to deliver mail next year unless Congress acts. Privatizers will use that crisis to push cuts, closures, price hikes, and corporate takeover.

We need to force Congress to save the post office and protect universal mail service now.

We can’t sugarcoat what is happening. Trump, Wall Street profiteers, and competitors like FedEx – every privatizer who wants to carve up the Postal Service has been waiting for a moment like this. Congress forces the USPS to operate under bad policy that amounts to rigged rules for decades then they point to the damage to be able to demand cuts, closures, price hikes, fewer delivery days, and ultimately privatization.

The post office delivers everywhere, from dense cities and rural towns to tribal communities, mountain roads, and senior centers — all ps that private carriers only serve when the profits are good enough. Seniors depend on it. Veterans depend on it. People with disabilities, families waiting on prescriptions, voters mailing ballots, small businesses, and communities left behind by corporate delivery companies all depend on the Postal Service.

Congress created many of the policy constraints crushing USPS, and Congress has the power to fix them. But Congress only moves when they feel public pressure. Throughout this fight, we’ve sent millions of letters demanding action to stop privatization, defend universal service, and protect the people’s post office from Trump’s hostile takeover attempts – and time and time again it’s worked because you have stepped up together with us.

Now, the USPS Faces its Biggest Threat Yet
Privatizers want the public to believe the Post Office is failing on its own. That is a lie. USPS has been forced to carry financial burdens no private carrier would ever accept, while still delivering to every address in the country that FedEx and UPS do not have and do not want because there’s no profit. Privatizers don’t care if they cause people to have fewer delivery days, higher stamp prices, local post offices to close, Trump and his greedy privatizer buddies only care about making a profit from privatizing a treasured public service.

But we know how to beat them because we have done it before. We helped stop Trump’s 2018 privatization push. We sounded the alarm and united a powerful coalition to fight DeJoy’s 2020 sabotage. We helped build the public pressure that passed the Postal Service Reform Act with bipartisan support, and we helped keep controversial figures off the postal board. More recently, we helped stop Trump’s illegal plan to fire the USPS Board of Governors, block his attempt to merge USPS under the Commerce Department.

Trump’s Postmaster General is making clear that USPS is now entering a dangerous new phase. If Congress fails to act, postal workers, rural communities, veterans, seniors, small businesses, and everyday families will pay the price while corporate delivery competitors and Wall Street vultures position themselves to profit from the wreckage.

Let’s keep the post office in public hands.
