Fireworks Ban On The November Ballot

| (July 4, 2026) — Just over a week ago in Greenbank, a fire and explosion at a home containing roughly 700 pounds of fireworks destroyed the house, damaged two neighboring homes, and sent three firefighters to the hospital. It was the second fireworks-related house fire on Whidbey in as many years—and a preventable one.
In the wake of this recent tragedy, WEAN is urging our members to support Safe and Humane Fireworks of Island County in its effort to place an advisory measure on the November 2026 ballot asking voters whether consumer fireworks should be banned in unincorporated Island County. The Board of Island County Commissioners has already voted to place the measure on the ballot, but because no funds were budgeted for it, the community must raise the money to cover the administrative cost. Every dollar donated brings this measure closer to the voters. WEAN has long held that consumer fireworks harm Island County’s environment and wildlife, in addition to the risks they pose to people, pets, and property.
