Expert Report Notes ‘Dramatic
Deterioration’ in U.S. Nuclear Security
Karen DeYoung / Washington Post
(September 15, 2026) — A new expert report assesses a “dramatic deterioration” in nuclear safety conditions in the United States, due primarily to the “erosion of the independence” of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission under the Trump administration. The country’s score fell by 10 points to 66 on a scale of 100, the biggest decline the Nuclear Threat Initiative has ever recorded.
Trump Is Playing a Game of
Chicken with Nuclear Weapons
Win Without War
(September 20, 2026) — Experts just released a troubling report sounding the alarm on “a historic lapse in nuclear security” in the United States. Meanwhile, Trump’s barreling forward with plans to build and test more of these unnecessary nuclear weapons, and kickstarting a new global arms race through a dangerous deal with the Saudi government.
The good news is, Trump can’t get the money to build his new nukes without Congress’ thumbs-up on the National Defense Authorization Act and appropriations bills. And Rep. Meeks has already introduced a joint resolution of disapproval to BLOCK Trump’s dangerous U.S.-Saudi nuclear pact. The not-so-good news: House Speaker Mike Johnson is doing everything he can to avoid and cancel any vote he knows he might lose.
But we’re as undeterred as ever. We’re going to make the most of every moment between now and the next opportunity for Congress to stop Trump from playing a terrifying game of escalation that makes us all less safe. It means jumping into action, and that’s why we need your help.
We know finances are tight — and if that’s you, please focus on your needs first and foremost.
Right now, the U.S. government seems dead set on escalating a nuclear arms race, in an environment that’s more unpredictable than ever. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
Trump and his war cabinet are trampling the few nuclear safeguards we have and spurring a terrifying nuclear arms race that only ends in global disaster. That’s after pushing for new nuclear tests for the first time since 1992. It’s happening while the Doomsday Clock ticks ever closer to midnight — the hour of global annihilation and the end of human civilization. And there is still nothing standing between Trump’s finger and the nuclear button.
Win Without War was built for moments like these. We’re at the epicenter of a wide network of movement partners, media, and key allies in Congress that can turn the tide.
We’re poised to kickstart a massive response. But we can’t do it without you.
Because we’ll be honest: We’re stretched thin. For months, Win Without War has been frantically responding to everything this Administration has thrown at us: illegal war with Iran, a murderous campaign off the coast of South America, rogue ICE agents — and preparing to mobilize if Trump makes good on his dangerous threats to deploy troops to the polls.
2026 hasn’t let up for a second, and now a new crisis looms large. Unfortunately, too many in Congress aren’t doing enough to stop it. Luckily, we’ve got the relationships on the Hill, partners across the movement, and the kind of people power that can spur lawmakers to action.
How do we know we have what it takes to respond? Because we’ve done it before, Gar. Now, we’ve got to turn on a dime and pour our energy into stopping Trump’s nuke disaster. And we can’t do it alone.
Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
