White House vs. Wolves:
Trump Just Signed Their Fate
Ekō
(October 5, 2026) — Majestic, intelligent, and fiercely loyal, gray wolves live in devoted family packs — led by an alpha pair who mate for life and raise their pups as a tight-knit unit.
Among them is the Mexican gray wolf: the smallest subspecies in North America, and one of the rarest, most fragile mammals on the continent. With only 319 left in the wild, Trump’s latest executive order has become their biggest predator.
Trump wants to strip Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections from gray wolves and Mexican gray wolves in a desperate move to appease the livestock industry.
Now, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has less than 3 months left to determine whether these wolf populations have recovered enough to de-list them from the ESA. If we create a massive public outcry, we can force the secretary to stop Trump’s attack on wolves. Add your name now:
Tell Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to keep wolves protected!
For nearly a century, Mexican gray wolves were trapped, shot, and poisoned to near extinction. Their fragile survival rested on a miraculous captive breeding program, and stripping away federal protections now threatens to destroy decades of hard-won recovery work.
In fact, wolf attacks on livestock are extremely rare. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows non-predator causes claim roughly 6% of annual calf deaths, while wolves account for just 0.65% — a number that remains low even as wolf populations grow. Plus, ranchers are entitled to 100% compensation for their wolf-predation losses under state and federal programs.
When Trump claimed, “You can shoot them as of today,” it was a blatant lie. Gray wolves are still protected under the Endangered Species Act and to officially delist a species, federal agencies must follow a strict administrative process.
This executive order is making wolves the scapegoat for a bigger underlying issue: While US ranchers face real pressures from Trump’s decision to loosen beef import restrictions, slaughtering wolves will do nothing to lower record-high beef prices for consumers.
Trump’s executive order is a dangerous precedent to bypass the very framework Congress built to keep decisions on endangered species and their recovery separated and protected from political tantrums.
