This would be the first public U.S. execution in nearly a century. In an era where videos can be quickly and easily downloaded, shared, and manipulated, the repercussions are unimaginable. Elected officials and organizations across the political spectrum quickly condemned the move, including Win Without War.

Hegseth made this call — the latest in a long string of reckless, outrageous actions. Congress has a chance to respond, and soon:

In the coming weeks, the House is anticipated to vote on eight articles of impeachment against Secretary Hegseth introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie’s (R-KY). Both chambers are currently debating a number of vehicles — the National Defense Authorization Act, defense appropriations, budget reconciliation packages, and supplemental funding requests — that could bolster Hegseth’s Pentagon with an additional $1.5 TRILLION. The clock is ticking to make our voices heard.

We have a narrow window to flood congressional offices with our demands before those votes. Every lawmaker needs to hear a clear message: Hegseth must go and he shouldn’t get one more dime.

Public executions were once a shameful staple of American life, particularly under Jim Crow. It doesn’t diminish the gravity of Hasan’s crime to recognize the troubling parallels of racism underpinning that era and Hegseth’s decision this week. He has made his Islamophobic ideology and anti-Palestinian racism abundantly clear.[2]

The last state-sanctioned public execution was in the late 1930s. Looking back to that era, people are rightly shocked and appalled by the prospect of widely attended public lynchings that were once all too commonplace. We don’t need to compare Hegseth’s decision to the actions of human rights-abusing governments abroad to know that his actions are horrific and unjustifiable.

Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA), the powerful ranking member on the House Armed Services Committee, put it plainly, “There is a reason why we treat the meting out of justice with the seriousness it demands” He continued, “We are a democratic country and should take the rule of law seriously, not turn it into a spectacle.”

Hegseth is counting on us to grow numb as he keeps lowering the bar.
People who believe in peace and justice — people like you — refuse to.

The path forward is simple: The House of Representatives must adopt Rep. Massie’s articles of impeachment against Hegseth when it returns in November, and the Senate must promptly convict and remove him from office. As and until they take those crucial steps, members of Congress – particularly those negotiating the National Defense Authorization Act and defense appropriations bills – should refuse to give him one dime more.

ACTION: Add your name to urge Congress: Hegseth must be impeached and removed from office, and lawmakers should soundly reject any Pentagon funding that could further embolden his dangerous brand of leadership.
