(October 19, 2026) — Iran has issued a chilling warning over the undersea internet cables running through the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that the escalating conflict with the United States could threaten the hidden arteries of the global economy.
IRGC spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebi warned that seven major submarine cables pass through the strategic waterway, carrying critical internet and commercial data. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have reportedly discussed plans to impose fees on technology giants such as Google, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon for using these cables.
Tehran has also issued veiled warnings about potential disruptions to digital infrastructure across the Persian Gulf. Any damage to these cables could affect global internet connectivity, banking systems, financial transactions, military communications and AI infrastructure.
